Where did the air filter and its tubing go?

At the moment I own 2 Peugeot 205s. A bone stock GTi and a CTi convertible that’s being engine swapped with a turbo engine. I’ve found a nice 205 XS, which slots just below the GTi but with the GTi interior. Double carburetor combined with the old 1970s engine that was phased out around 1988.

Owner is selling the car because it belonged to his brother, who has died. He knows nothing about the car, but it does have new tires and the (German) inspection is valid for another year. I’ve already made an appointment.

1987, 165k km (103k miles) and it has the new for 1987 dashboard.

I’ve never owned a car with a carburetor before. I want to though. This has two! Single barrel ones.

What does Oppo say? Good pick?

I say get it. It looks clean, and I love the interior.

Also, I keep looking at the lead in shot, and I’m not sure how that’s an engine. Like, I see engine pieces, but they aren’t going together in a way that makes sense. I see carbs, yup. And what appears to be an alternator, and an oil filter. But where is the actual engine block? I see those things running front to back which look like cam covers, but the accessories are transverse.

More pepperpots? More pepperpots!

That roof does look a bit mold-y, though.

I sure hope for you that the state of the cars in the background doesn’t say too much about this one.

I like how Peugeot saved money on badges by putting XS badges upside down on the SX models.
it looks in a very good shape, if the price is right, why not?

TIL you can get a 205 with a carb. For some reason I though these were all fuel injected.

It’s transverse, tilted 72 degrees.

As an owner of a carb’d Peugeot, I say... I’m not sure. Does it come with manual choke? If it doesn’t, you might be looking at a carb swap (I said ‘might’), because the auto choke usually goes haywire after all these decades, and because it’s auto, you cannot override if. But even if it’s a manual choke system, you still have to have the two carbs working in unison, and there are less and less people around that can truly set up carbs.

With all this said - these cars are appreciating, don’t they? If you can’t fix it, just sell it on, and don’t look back :-)

BTW. Is that a TU engine, or an X? I bet it’s an X, because it’s lying almost flat, isn’t it.

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s an XY8, so I’d bet (not sure at all) manual choke. I recently drove a single carb 205 with an XY that did have a manual choke.

Anyway, if it runs right there isn’t that much to go wrong right?

In my experience carbed engines make a much nicer sound and feel a lot more raw and mechanical, but they require a lot more upkeep and fettling to keep running smoothly. Expect to have to buy yourself a book about cleaning and tuning carbs.

As long as it’s something a novice with a book and basic tools can do, I’m all in.

ayep. Cabs are simple instruments, if it runs right and does not consume exceedingly too much gas, you’re good. And if it’s a manual choke, you’re halfway there.

I am in the process of setting up a manual choke carb in the 505, because the auto choke solex was getting really bad. I’m not doing it, just driving, and reporting to the carburetor mechanic, how i feel and how much I spend at the pump. The latest jet change meant +1 l /100km, and it still doesn’t goes that well from standstill, so this is a truly occult science....

I’m not too worried about fuel economy. This isn’t going to be a daily driver. I have a 406 coupe on LPG for that job. It just needs to run right. I’d like to get some extra wrenching experience, make it nicer than it is now, and sell it on. GTis appreciate like mad, so I bet (another knock on wood) a nice almost-GTi will appreciate as well. Not that I’m doing this for the money, but appreciation means lower costs .

No, far from it. Only the GTis had injection at first if I recall correctly. And the diesels of course...

Basically everything air or fuel related, such as choke, jet size, and a/f ratio, you are now responsible for determining the best setting and adjusting yourself.

That glas roof is the one thing that worries me, assuming the engine runs right.

He mentioned it belonged to his brother who has died. In the listing it’s noted that it’s got a valid German inspection until 10-2017, so it can’t be off the road overly long. The shitty cars in the background are a bit of a red flag though, I do agree.

The 1100€ asking price (found the car) would be ok for any running and clean car basically.
I’d give it a big plus for the panoramic sunroof, if it doesn’t leak of course, the clean interior, the second gen dashboard, the GTI wheels, and the new tires.
On the other hand, it will never be a real GTI, and it will never be as valuable, so i’d offer 800€, which would probably work.
[edit]
note: I’m a lowballer, I once offered 200€ for a CTI listed for 300€ (10 years ago), and drove home with it.

Well done! Anyway, I’d bid something like that €800 as well. It depends on the condition of the car really. If it’s shitty I won’t bid at all, if it’s excellent I might bid more, if it’s rough in a way that can be fixed I might bid less.

The Lancia Zeta Turbo I bought as an engine donor for my CTi was listed for €800. I drove home in that thing for €450. I still overpaid, but at least the engine is in good condition.

You should be able to do basic wrenching on it, setting up idle and CO, if needed, checking the fuel tubing, gas cabling etc, as well as normal engine maintenance. Maybe the hardest part is to ID the carbs precisely, as there are so many types and sub-types around, so that you can get manuals for them. But it’s not impossible at all. However, if they start good, run properly, then don’t touch them, and if they don’t, maybe start with ignition, before you touch the carburetors :-)

The GTi has a very different engine, from a different engine family.

The engine was utterly, utterly worn. Leaking everywhere. We took the head off, and kept finding new spots where it leaked. It needed to be completely rebuilt.

So I bought a Lancia Zeta with the XU10 J2 TE also found in the 406/605/806/Xantia/XM/Evasion/Ulysse. Fits right in, as the CTi engine is an XU as well. Not that I’m doing much of the work...

It’ll go from 105 to 147 hp and from 132 to 235 Nm of torque.

(note that you BX has an XU (XUD) as well)

Interesting. I have to admit, my knowledge of Peugeots is extremely limited. But if you already have a GTi & CTi, it sounds like you’re working on a whole set.

As time went on injection became necessary to meet emissions regs.

The only 205 I’ve driven was a 1990 1100 with one carburettor, manual choke and four gears.

Nice plan! And stop giving me ideas for the citroen ;) that’s far too tempting...

Should be bloody fast your little CTi, and probably a very nice cruiser as well with such a torquey engine.
